Portugal has officially kicked off the 2026 World University Orienteering Championships. Through August 1, Vila Real is hosting the 24th edition of the competition, bringing together hundreds of university student-athletes from 30 countries for what is one of the sport’s premier international events.
The Opening Ceremony took place this Monday, July 27, on the outdoor stage of the Vila Real Municipal Theater, marking the official start of the championship. The event featured remarks by Diogo Braz, President of FADU Portugal; Mehmet Gûnay, Member of the FISU Executive Committee; and José Claudino, Vice Mayor of Vila Real.
In their remarks, representatives from the organizing bodies and the host municipality highlighted the role of university sports as a forum for international competition and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of the World University Orienteering Championships in bringing together student-athletes from different countries.
Over the next few days, Vila Real will host the various events of the championship, welcoming some of the top universities and student-athletes in the sport. Hosting this competition reinforces FISU’s confidence in FADU Portugal’s organizational capabilities and marks yet another milestone for Portuguese university sports on the international stage.
In addition to its organizational responsibilities, Portugal will be represented in the various events by a delegation of 12 student-athletes. The National University Team will strive to achieve the best possible results in front of the Portuguese public, representing the national colors in a competition that brings together the world’s university elite in orienteering.
