Welcome Message – OC President, Mr. Diogo Braz

It is with great enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility that, on behalf of the Portuguese University Sports Federation (FADU Portugal), I welcome you to the Vila Real 2026 FISU World University Championship Orienteering.

Portugal has a strong tradition of hosting major university sports events, marked by excellence, hospitality, and passion. The awarding of this World University Championship to the city of Vila Real represents another milestone in that journey, reinforcing the confidence that the International University Sports Federation (FISU) places in Portugal and in FADU as partners of excellence in promoting sport and its values within the academic context.

Orienteering perfectly embodies the principles that guide university sport: intelligence, strategy, perseverance, and a deep connection with nature. Vila Real and the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region offer a unique setting for this competition, a rare blend of natural and cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and a vibrant academic community centered around the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD).

This event will be an opportunity to celebrate the territory, boost the local economy, and strengthen the connection between academia, students, and the local community. For FADU, it represents yet another step in consolidating Portugal’s position as a global reference in the university sports movement, promoting the holistic development of students through sport and international cooperation.

In 2026, Vila Real will host an unforgettable experience, where competition, friendship, and sharing will be at the heart of it all. We are confident that every participant will leave with lasting memories of a welcoming city, a dedicated organization, and a country that lives and breathes sport with passion and enthusiasm.

We look forward to welcoming you in Vila Real and Portugal in 2026.
On behalf of FADU Portugal, it is an honor to host another historic moment in the world of university sport.

Diogo Braz
